CHAPTER 20

Denver, Colorado 1987

Papa Don’t Preach

Tally pulled into the driveway determined to tell her folks of her plans. She tried to pump up her resolve.

As she walked in the front room she saw her folks sitting on the couch reading. What better time, she thought, though her stomach jumped and her heart raced, to tell them of her move.

"Just in time to help with dinner,” her mom said, and her dad stood up and asked if they needed some help.

Tally broke in with a rush of adrenalin, "I spent some time this afternoon with Cody, had a long talk," and as her words came, Russell and Alicia Jamieson froze like statues, unable to move or speak. Tally continued, "This man is so important to me, I need him - no," she corrected herself, "I want him in my life.” When there was no reaction from her folks, her confidence building, she looked hard at her folks, first her mom, then her dad. "Please meet this man, give this a chance. It's the least you can do and if you really are concerned about this relationship, see what it's about."

"Hell no," her dad shouted. "How many times have we told you to stay away from Cody Brenman?"

"How many times," her mother said, "have we told you that nothing good will come of it and you'll get hurt? I'll tell you for the last time," her mother continued,” do not see this man again."

"I can't believe how pigheaded you both are. You've slammed your minds closed. Nothing I say gets through," Tally said, throwing herself down on the couch.

Voice raising her mom said, "If you'd brought him around when you first met him, it might be different but, no, you sneaked around like kids, no maturity. And if Cody's such a good man, he should have shown some honor, some consideration for us and insisted on some contact with us."

"He did," Tally replied, "and I talked him out of it. You had your minds made up when I first told you about him. You know you wouldn't give it a chance. You treat me like a cloistered novice in a nunnery. But you're both right - don't meet him. It would just be a Star Chamber, you the judge and jury. You're dead set against the man, I've no options and my opinions sail past you, deaf to your ears."

"Wait a minute," her father said. "You're a very intelligent woman, an IQ high enough to scare us sometimes. And, we've been very supportive of you. Hell, you won a piano tri-state championship when you were 17 years old."

"And," her mother said, "for your information, remember your father took a second job to support your lessons, the travel and expenses it took, and kept that job so you could continue your education and get your Masters. And, you realize how important education is to us. For generations education has been our linchpin. It was our way out of the hell we had been in, the Alabama’s and Mississippi’s of this country.
